The Gala celebrated the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion‘, which will not only celebrate fashion history by presenting some of the most beautiful archival designs ever made, but it will also nod to the natural world, and how it has been used in certain materials and has inspired design.

The exhibit  examines how technology can breathe new life into garments that are too old and fragile to be worn again. Through this, they will also focus on the need for sustainability in fashion and look at the evolution of human history and the endless cycle of creation and destruction. This is why the dress code is ‘The Garden of Time‘.

The night’s sartorial theme gets its name from a J.G. Ballard story about a count who—to stave off an angry mob nearing his castle—cuts a rose from his garden to slow down time until there are no flowers remaining. With the narrative’s futuristic undertones in harmony with the exhibit’s focus on old and new, the scene unfolded with a diverse array of attire, ranging from florals to techno-inspired fashion—and perhaps even a reference or two to “Sleeping Beauty.“
