Rolex’s remarkable journey began in 1905 when Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis founded the company in London. Operating under the name “Wilsdorf and Davis,” their vision was clear: to create wristwatches that not only told time but also exuded class and precision. Just three years after its inception, in 1908, Hans Wilsdorf registered the name “Rolex” as a trademark. He believed it was the perfect name for a watch brand – short, easy to pronounce across languages, and aesthetically pleasing on watch dials.

Rolex’s relentless pursuit of precision began in the early 1910s when the company received its first Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision. This was a sign of things to come, as Rolex’s commitment to crafting highly accurate timepieces became a hallmark of the brand. And on 15 July, 1914, the Kew Observatory awarded a Rolex wristwatch a Class ‘A’ precision certificate. A distinction that until then had only been merited by (large) marine chronometers. 

One of the most significant turning points in Rolex’s history occurred in 1926 with the introduction of the Oyster case. This groundbreaking innovation, pioneered by Rolex, made watches waterproof and dustproof. The Oyster case set a new standard for durability in the watch industry, and its impact is still felt today.

In 1931, Rolex introduced the Perpetual rotor, a groundbreaking mechanism that would change the watch industry forever. It was the world’s first self-winding mechanism for wristwatches, eliminating the need for manual winding and making Rolex watches even more convenient for wearers.

The 1950s marked an era of exploration and adventure for Rolex. The company introduced the Explorer, designed for adventurers and climbers. Simultaneously, the Submariner, introduced in 1954, became the world’s first dive watch waterproof to 100 meters, catering to the growing popularity of scuba diving.

In 1955, Rolex collaborated with Pan American World Airways to create the GMT-Master. This innovative watch allowed pilots and travelers to track two time zones simultaneously, a feature that became invaluable in the jet age.

The 1960s witnessed the rise of the Rolex Daytona, a watch that would become iconic, especially in versions associated with the legendary actor and racing enthusiast, Paul Newman. These “Paul Newman” Daytonas remain highly coveted among collectors. This watch stands as the most iconic of all Rolex Daytona watches, auctioned at a record breaking $17,752,500.

The watch was purchased by Paul Newman’s wife as she worried about him getting into an accident due to his passion for motor racing. She had the watch’s case back engraved with “DRIVE CAREFULLY ME,” an equally loving and humorous gesture.

As we move into the late 20th century and beyond, Rolex continued to innovate. The brand introduced features like the Quickset date function, sapphire crystals, and the Parachrom hairspring, enhancing the watches’ resistance to shocks and magnetic fields. Newer models like the Daytona Ceramic and the Sky-Dweller showcased Rolex’s ability to stay at the forefront of luxury watchmaking.
